As the morning sun peeked over the ancient temples of Tiruvannamalai, our merry band of five travellers eagerly piled into the Toyota Innova taxi we had arranged. With our backpacks stuffed and hearts filled with wanderlust, we prepared to embark on an epic road trip from this spiritual town in Tamil Nadu all the way to the beach havens of Goa – a journey spanning over 800 kilometers. Little did we know the magic that awaited us on the open road.
While flights are undoubtedly faster, there’s an allure to a good old-fashioned road trip that’s hard to beat. By going the taxi route, we had the freedom to make spontaneous stops, immerse ourselves in the diverse cultures along the way, and bond over shared experiences and terrible road trip snacks (looking at you, masala peanuts). But perhaps the biggest draw? Splitting the fare five ways made this an absolute steal compared to other transport options.
As we left Tiruvannamalai’s holy dust in our rear-view mirror, the countryside opened up into a kaleidoscope of vibrant villages, swaying palm trees, and endless vistas that seemed to stretch towards the horizon. Our seasoned driver, Ravi, expertly navigated the winding roads while regaling us with tales of his hometown and harmonizing with the latest Tamil hits on the radio.
Our first pit stop was the ancient shore temples of Mamallapuram, a Stone Age architectural marvel that caused our jaws to go slack with awe. Ravi insisted we explore the mind-boggling stone chariots and intricately carved rock caves dating back thousands of years. As we traced the carvings with our fingertips, we couldn’t help but feel a profound connection to the artists and stonemasons who had dedicated lifetimes to these masterpieces.
Revitalized by lunch of crispy masala dosas and tangy sambar at a roadside eatery, we soldiered on towards the tech hub of Bangalore. The roads became smoother, the terrain morphed into undulating hills, and I swear I detected the first whiffs of the ocean breeze. We made a quick detour to snap photos at the iconic Nandi Hills, a gorgeous ancient settlement cradled amidst lush greenery.
As dusk fell, we reached Bangalore’s bustling streets just in time to witness the city’s vibrant night markets. Salesmen hawked colourful bangles, vibrant saris, and a dizzying assortment of street food that made our mouths water. After gobbling up crispy vada and piping hot chai, we collapsed into our hotel, thrilled at the prospect of exploring more the next morning.
The following day, we devoted ourselves to Bangalore’s trendiest pubs, lively breweries, and the citys pride – the Vidhana Soudha. This massive neo-Dravidian palatial building is one of the most impressive legislative buildings I’ve ever witnessed. We wandered its corridors in awe, admiring the 300-foot granite dome and ceremonial steps flanked by roaring lion sculptures.
Alas, the road beckoned once again, and by noon we had bid farewell to Bangalore’s charms. The drive towards Goa was particularly scenic, with the Western Ghats providing an emerald drapery over our path. We made frequent stops to capture photos of swaying fields, tumbling waterfalls, and sleepy villages where time seemed to stand still.
A true highlight was trekking to the Dudhsagar Falls, one of India’s tallest waterfalls, and feeling the rhythmic roar of the cascades reverberate in our chests. Despite our drenched clothes and weary legs, we agreed there was no better way to stretch our limbs during that 12-hour drive to Goa.
As we neared our final destination, glimpses of Goa’s famed shores began to grace our vision. Excitement mounted with each passing coconut grove and beach shack. Finally, when our taxi crested that final hill and the Arabian Sea unfurled before us in all her turquoise majesty, raucous cheers filled the vehicle.
We had traversed over 800 kilometers and countless worlds – from spiritual temples to modern cityscapes to nature’s grandest feats. Yet, what made this journey so remarkable was the laughter, camaraderie, and memories forged between five friends who had seized the opportunity to exploration this incredible country in an intimate, unhurried fashion.
When we ultimately found our guesthouse amidst Goa’s charming lanes, we tallied up the cumulative taxi fare for the 5-day journey: just 15,000 rupees split between us, an absolute steal! As we clunked bottles of chilled beer and swapped photos from our epic journey, we marveled at how reasonable this adventure had been.
In an age of quick flights and rushed vacations, there’s something transcendental about surrendering to the open road. By automobile, you become intimately acquainted with the curves of the landscape, the cadences of the countryside, the local flavours, and the kaleidoscopic cultures that make India such a treasured gem. Most importantly, I’d forged memories with friends that would linger far longer than a fleeting airplane transit ever could.
So grab your road snacks, crank up the road trip playlist, and don’t be afraid to veer off the beaten path every now and then. You might just reconnect with the spirit of true exploration and discover the magic that still abounds in a slow-paced journey.
